Baptism is one of the two sacraments (the other being the Lord's Supper) given to us by Jesus. In the Bible, there are no instances of infant baptism, only infant dedication. The biblical way is believer's baptism, based on a person's profession of faith at the age of reason (usually 12-15, or thereabouts).
Also, biblically, a person is immersed, either in a pool or some other body of sufficient deep water. However, with the advent of infant baptism in the early centuries of the Catholic Church, the tradition of infant baptism has lived through the ages.
At the Miami Lakes Congregational Church we perform baptisms for both infants and adults. There are two paths a family can opt for on this: private or public baptisms.
PUBLIC BAPTISMS
This is the option we would prefer because it is done in the church worship service and suggests that you and your family have chosen to become an active part of our church family. (When we choose to have our child baptized, as a parent, we are makinga commitment to raise our child in the Christian faith.) For this, there is no fee. You need only begin attending services and choose to become active in the life of our congregation.
Upon your request to have your child baptized (or to be baptized yourself), the Minister will meet with you for a brief baptismal awareness session and will make the ncessary arrangements for the Baptism on the date of your choosing. During the Baptismal observance, a certificate of Baptism will be provided for the family.
PRIVATE BAPTISMS
For this option (normally on Sundays at 12:30 p.m.), we have the following requirements:
- Attend two worship services (10:30 a.m. on Sundays) prior to the baptism.
- Meet with the pastor for a thirty minute baptism awareness session.
- Pay a fee of $200, due on the day of the baptism.
